Lee Asks Bridgewater and Bennett to Join Him in Demanding Middleman of Illegal Mailer Name Accomplices

June 15, 2010

June 15, 2010 – Alpine, Utah – Mike Lee announced his intention to file a complaint with the Federal Election Committee in regards to the last minute mailer before the convention that listed an unidentifiable organization in the “paid for by” disclaimer. The mailer was later determined to be hurtful to Lee's convention campaign by a BYU study. Lee also asked his opponent and former opponent to join him in demanding that Tim Stewart, the self-proclaimed middleman and broker of the “temple mailer,” former aid to Bob Bennett and donor to Tim Bridgewater, immediately name his accomplices.

“Federal law was clearly broken. The people deserve to know who is lying in the shadows trying to affect their vote in this Senate election with misleading mailers,” said Lee, “That's why I'm asking Tim Bridgewater and Senator Bob Bennett to join me in demanding that Tim Stewart comply with Federal election law and immediately disclose the names of the accomplices who paid for and authorized the mailer before the primary election before they strike again.”

In a recent interview, Tim Stewart said, “I sincerely wish that I could take credit for what may be the most brilliant and possibly the biggest single game-changing political play in Utah politics in the last 20 years. But I can't. I am not that diabolical nor creative.”

State Party Chair Dave Hansen vehemently disagreed with Tim Stewart's assessment. Hansen posted on his facebook page, “I don't know Tim Stewart and I don't ever want to know him. The guy is an idiot [who] deserves to have his butt kicked all the way out of Utah politics for two reason. First, that he would be a part of this kind of cheap political trick and, second, because he actually thinks it was a 'brilliant...game-changing political play.' Mr. Stewart -- it was neither. I am sure neither the Bennett nor the Bridgewater nor the Lee campaign knew anything about this. It was the childish product of Tim Stewart and his childish friends. Now stay out of Utah politics.

Jonathan Reid, campaign manager for the Lee campaign said, “It's imperative that Tim Stewart do the right thing and name his accomplices. The voters deserve to know. That's why the law exists. I sincerely hope Tim Bridgewater and Senator Bennett will join Mike Lee in this effort to fully disclose all responsible parties.”
